Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is Samsung’s newest addition to the wearable world. This comes along with the introduction of the newest Flip and Fold series. Available in 40mm and 44mm, I went with 44mm hoping to get as much content as I could on my wrist.

Galaxy Watch 5 Design & Display

The Galaxy Watch 5 has a completely flat top case, with no raised bezel for extra protection, but comes with sapphire crystal which makes it harder to break and scratch. There’s no titanium case here, as Samsung has opted for Armor Aluminum instead, a fancy name for a lightweight metal. There are no moving parts on this watch, but it features a capacitive bezel around the display for some added interface interaction, like quickly navigating through tiles.

The bottom has a convex shape that will push the whole watch upward a little bit giving it a floating effect, at least on my skinny wrist.

The display’s just as bright and vivid as you would expect from a Samsung device with an AMOLED screen. Even on a bright sunny day, the colors are making the on-screen content pop.

There are quite a few band choices, in my case I went with the Small/Medium Sport Band in Graphite.

Galaxy Watch 5 Software & Features

The Galaxy Watch 5 comes with Wear OS 3.5 and Samsung’s One UI Watch 4.5 on board. It also features 8 new watch faces as well as 88 new watchface complications. The watch faces range from simple to very detailed. Using the smartwatch is intuitive and straightforward. Shortly after being paired, it offers a quick tour guide about how gestures will affect the functions.

The Galaxy Watch 5 features an innovative Bioactive sensor that offers accurate health data and wellness insights. There’s now also a skin temperature sensor as part of the health biometric data but unfortunately, it doesn’t work at the moment, it’s most likely reserved for future software updates.

Users are able to perform a comprehensive body composition analysis, the watch will provide useful advice on how to attain objectives, and remind users to rehydrate after an intense cardio session. Samsung has also significantly improved sleep tracking on the Galaxy Watch 5. If you experience sleep disorders like sleep apnea, it will notify you so that you may take the required action. There is also a sleep coaching plan with individualized checkpoints, targets, and milestones.

A quick tip: if you need to screen capture your watch’s screen all you have to do is quickly press both side buttons at the same time. The photo will save on your phone’s gallery.

Galaxy Watch 5 Battery & Charging

From my tests, I started the day with the 44mm Galaxy Watch 5 with 100% of capacity and ended the day with  50-40%. I can’t say I used it all the time but checked a few notifications and setting here and there. Tracking heart rate 24/7 and being used for overnight sleep tracking will easily drain at least 40% off the remaining battery.

If you do running workouts daily and use the watch for tracking your route or even rely on the watch fully for music and messages during that workout that’s where the sudden drain will be noticed. If you do all the above activities, this watch will most likely get you through your whole day.

The Galaxy Watch 5 comes with 10W wireless charging with a USB C port. It will take almost two hours to completely charge the watch. For some reason if you watch is completely dead you will notice that it will quickly charge to 40-45% in about 22 minutes.

Final Thoughts

To be straightforward with the Galaxy Watch 4 users, well it’s not worth upgrading.

A few reasons to buy this watch would be the Wear OS, good battery life, glass durability, improved health sensors, and a newer software version. There is no better Android watch to buy at the time of writing this article, especially with its reasonable $279 (for the 40mm) starting price.
